The old Westinghouse atom smasher that has been lying on its side in Forest Hills for over a year could soon have a new home, but only if a lot of cash can be raised to move it.Rob Pfaffmann, of

Westinghouse atom smasher

This accelerator worked by static electricity from a Van de Graaff generator, which was invented by Robert J. Van de Graaff in 1929.

Westinghouse Atom Smasher A historical marker for the Westinghouse Atom Smasher has been placed at the corner of West St & North Ave in Forest Hills. The "Atom Smasher" was the nation’s first industrial Van de Graaff generator, built by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company in 1937, in an effort to conduct research into nuclear physics. Built in 1937, the atom smasher was an integral piece of cutting edge nuclear physics research conducted here at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory campus. In 1958 this particular atom smasher was decommissioned in favor of more powerful particle accelerators, but it remained the most visible representation of the atomic age here in western PA. Westinghouse Atom Smasher. The Atom Smasher (the world's first Industrial Van de Graaff generator) was built by Westinghouse Research Labs in 1937. Five million volts produced by the generator were used to bombard atoms with high energy electrons, creating nuclear reactions.

The atom smasher was so far ahead of its time that when Westinghouse decided to build it in 1936, it would be another three years before the discovery of nuclear fission revealed the possibilities of nuclear power. Westinghouse physicists created nuclear reactions by bombarding target atoms with high-energy particles.

The atom smasher put us on the path to gaining fundamental knowledge of nuclear physics. Built by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1937, “the atom smasher was the centerpiece of the first large-scale program in nuclear physics established in industry,” according to Institute of The Westinghouse Atom Smasher was an electrostatic nuclear accelerator operated by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation at their Research Laboratories in Forest Hills, Pennsylvania. Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped structure on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. It was mothballed in 1958, and when I photographed it in 2013 there was hope to preserve the structure as part of a school.

Five million volts produced by the generator were used to bombard atoms with high energy electrons, creating nuclear reactions. The Westinghouse atom smasher is an iconic relic from the very dawn of the atomic age. Very few such machines or artifacts remain. The earliest research here made discoveries that contributed to humankind’s fundamental understanding of nuclear physics, paving the way for all later nuclear developments.
